One Thing I Always Check Before My Kids Get in the Pool (And You Should Too)

Before my kids get the all-clear to jump in the pool, I take a minute to walk around and do a quick safety check. I’m not counting how many kids are already splashing or checking if the water looks crystal clear.

I’m checking the drain.

It’s one of those things most people overlook—but it’s a small detail that can make a huge difference in safety. As both a pediatrician and a mom, it’s a non-negotiable for me.

💡 Why pool drains matter more than people realize

Pool and spa drains can create serious suction, especially if the cover is broken, missing, or not up to safety standards. That suction has caused hair, clothing, or even limbs to get trapped underwater. It's rare—but when it happens, it’s fast, silent, and incredibly dangerous.

👀 Where to actually look for the drain

If you’re thinking, “Wait... I don’t even know where the drain is,” don’t worry—you’re not alone. Here’s what to look for:

  • Main drains are usually on the bottom of the pool, often near the deep end, but sometimes right in the center of the floor.
  • You may also see smaller suction outlets or drain-like covers near the walls or steps—especially in spas or shallow sections.
  • They often look like circular plastic grates, about the size of a dinner plate, usually white or gray.

🛠 Here's what I always check before my kids swim

Drain cover is secure

  • No cracks, no missing or loose screws, and nothing that seems like it could wiggle or come off.

Cover is curved or dome-shaped

  • Flat, old-school grates that a kid can sit or stand on are outdated and more dangerous. Newer covers are designed to reduce suction risks.

Quick suction check with a toy (or my hand)

  • I drop a small toy near the drain and watch. If it suddenly gets pulled down—that’s a red flag.
  • I also wave my hand near the drain. If I feel any pull or suction, even subtle, I don’t let my kids swim until it’s checked out. If I can feel it, a small child absolutely can’t fight against it.

No visible blockages or debris on the drain

  • Sometimes, you might notice something covering or sitting on top of the drain—like a toy, clump of leaves, or buildup of dirt. This can temporarily reduce suction or make the drain seem inactive.
  • But here’s the catch: once that object moves or gets dislodged, suction can suddenly return—and be dangerously strong.
  • That’s why if a drain looks like something’s stuck on it, or if I’m unsure whether it’s functioning normally, I ask someone (like the pool owner or lifeguard) to check it before we swim.

No sharp edges or random hazards in or around the pool

  • I do a quick scan for anything sharp, broken, or out of place. A jagged tile, metal edge, or glass shard near the water can turn fun into first aid real fast.

💧 But what if water is coming out of the drains?

In some shallow or kid-friendly pools, you might notice several “drain-looking” covers that are pushing water out instead of pulling anything in. Those are usually:

Return Jets or Circulation Outlets
These are part of the pool’s filtration system—water gets cleaned and then pushed back into the pool through these jets. They often:

  • Are located on the walls or floor
  • Have a gentle stream of water flowing outward
  • Are normal and generally safe

You might also see:

  • Aeration jets that create bubbles or movement in splash areas
  • Overflow inlets that help circulate surface water

What I do as a pediatrician mom:
Even when I see water flowing out, I still give it a quick check. I wave my hand in front of the grate—if I feel water clearly pushing out and no suction, it’s likely a return jet. Still, I remind my kids to steer clear of sitting on or putting their face near any openings.

And if I’m not sure? I ask. A simple, “Are these return jets or suction drains?” can give peace of mind in seconds.

👶 What I teach my kids (without scaring them)

  • Drains aren’t for playing. They know to keep their distance and never touch, sit on, or dive near them.
  • We tie up long hair to avoid tangles and risk.
  • No stringy or baggy swimsuits that could snag.
  • And most importantly: If anything feels weird in the water—like they're being pulled in a direction they didn't intend—they’re to float, yell, and call for help.

Let’s be real: if a suction-related issue is happening, it’s not something most kids can just “wiggle free” from. That’s why prevention is key, not reaction.

👋 What to do if something seems off

If the drain cover looks cracked, broken, or anything just feels off—pause the swimming. Tell the pool owner, manager, or lifeguard. If it's a backyard pool and no one’s sure, better to delay swimming and have it inspected than to take a chance.

If you own a pool, make sure your drain cover is VGB-compliant (named for Virginia Graeme Baker, a young girl whose tragic death led to important pool safety laws). These covers are designed to prevent dangerous suction and entrapment.

🔁 Even if it’s a pool you visit all the time...

I know it’s easy to assume everything is fine when it’s a pool you’ve been to a dozen times—your community pool, a friend’s backyard, even your own.

But things change.

  • A drain cover could crack or loosen.
  • A toy might be stuck on the drain from earlier in the day.
  • Something could be broken and no one’s noticed yet.

That’s why I make it a habit to do a quick check every single time we swim—whether it’s the first visit of the season or the third dip of the day. It takes under a minute, and it gives me peace of mind before the water fun begins.

🛟 One Last Thing, Parent to Parent

It might feel awkward to be “that mom” walking around the pool doing a safety check—but honestly? I’ll proudly wear that badge. Because at the end of the day, our kids’ safety is always worth a few extra seconds.

So next time you're at the pool, check that drain. Test the suction. Look for anything sharp. And then? Let the splashing begin—safely. 💦
